The morning light streamed through the tall glass windows of the Vance estate, casting a bright glow over the white marble floor. Sarah adjusted her grey maid uniform, making sure her white apron was tied neatly around her waist. She had worked for the family for three years, taking care of the massive home and treating everyone with gentleness. But everything had changed six months ago when Richard Vance brought his new wife, Elena, into the grand home. Elena was young, wore expensive silk gowns, and always looked down on the household staff with open coldness.
Sarah picked up her feather duster and carefully cleaned the mahogany side tables near the entrance. She could hear small cries coming from the upper floor where baby Leo was sleeping. Little Leo was only two months old, a sweet infant who had lost his birth mother during childbirth. Richard cared deeply for his son, but his busy corporate job meant he spent long hours away at the downtown office building.
Elena walked out of her bedroom, her beige off-shoulder gown sweeping across the wooden floorboards. She carried the swaddled baby in her arms, but her hands were loose around the white blanket. Sarah stopped dusting and looked up from the foyer, feeling a sudden wave of worry wash over her chest. Elena did not hold the child with warmth; her face remained flat and distant as she walked toward the staircase railing.
Elena: Sarah, make sure my tea is prepared downstairs in five minutes.
Sarah: Yes, ma'am. I will set the tray on the dining table right away.
Sarah turned toward the kitchen, but something made her pause near the bottom of the grand staircase. She turned her head back around just in time to see Elena leaning over the high wrought-iron railing. The height was dangerous, dropping two stories down to the hard stone floor below. Elena turned her head slightly, checking to see if Sarah was watching, and then her hands unclasping from the swaddled bundle.
Elena: Careful!
The words sounded fake, spoken without any real panic as her fingers completely let go of the small white blanket. Baby Leo fell into the empty space above the grand foyer, dropping fast toward the unyielding marble surface below. Sarah did not think or hesitate; her heart pounded against her ribs as instinct took control of her body completely.
She sprinted across the polished floor, her uniform shoes sliding against the slick stone. She threw her body forward, sliding on her knees across the sharp marble, stretching both arms wide into the empty air. The wind rushed past her ears as she closed her eyes for a split second, praying with every fiber of her soul. The bundle hit her forearms hard, the impact knocking the air out of her lungs as she slid to a stop. She pulled the baby tight against her chest, curling her body around him to protect his head from the floor.
The foyer fell completely silent for a moment, save for the soft whimpering of the tiny newborn. Sarah lay on her side, trembling violently as she brought the blanket to her face, checking Leo's breathing. He was safe, completely unharmed, resting in her warm embrace while tears poured down her cheeks. Above her, Elena stood frozen against the balcony railing, hyperventilating as shock spread across her pale, carefully made-up face.
