Taking Legal Action

The next morning the sun rose over a blanket of white snow covering the entire neighborhood in cold light. Mark did not waste a single minute sitting around feeling sorry for his terrible sister. By eight in the morning he had already called our trusted corporate attorney to explain the entire horror story. We took Lily to an urgent care clinic to get her cheek examined by a medical professional. The doctor documented the faint red bruise on her soft skin and filed an official police report for child abuse against Megan immediately.

We met our lawyer Mr. Henderson at his downtown office building later that afternoon. The high-rise office looked out over the icy city streets far below us. Mark set Megan's left-behind tablet on the polished glass conference table along with the medical report from the clinic. Mr. Henderson reviewed the text logs and the doctor's notes with a grave expression on his face.

Mr. Henderson: This text evidence shows clear intent to commit grand fraud against your daughter's trust estate.

Mark: I want her prosecuted to the absolute maximum limit of the law Mr. Henderson.

Laura: We also filed a police report for physical assault on an infant this morning.

Mr. Henderson: Excellent. With these medical records and your witness testimonies she is facing severe criminal charges.

Within forty-eight hours the local police department obtained a formal arrest warrant for Megan. They located her staying at a cheap highway motel on the edge of town using the last of her credit card limit. The police officers handcuffed her right in the lobby while she screamed and caused a massive scene for everyone present. She tried to claim that Mark and I had set her up because we were jealous of her life.

When the news of her arrest broke out Mark's extended family members called us in absolute shock and horror. Some of his distant aunts tried to ask us to drop the criminal charges to keep the family name clean. But Mark stood like an unshakeable mountain protecting his wife and child from any further manipulation or harm.

Mark: Anyone who defends a woman who hits a baby is welcome to cut contact with me forever.

His firm stance silenced the toxic family members once and for all. We knew that doing the hard thing was the only way to safeguard our home against future toxicity and malice.
