The Uncovering of the Secret

The silence that fell over the house after the front door slammed was deafening and heavy. Mark leaned his forehead against the solid wood of the door his hands trembling violently against the frame. I carried Lily over to the living room couch sitting down slowly as my knees felt completely weak. Mark walked over and sat beside us wrapping his massive arms around both of us while tears filled his eyes. He kissed Lily's red swollen cheek over and over again whispering endless apologies for not protecting her sooner.

Mark: I am so sorry Laura. I brought that monster into our home under our roof.

Laura: You didn't know she was capable of doing something so evil to a baby Mark.

Mark: I should have known. She has been getting worse ever since her divorce got toxic.

While I nursed Lily to calm her down Mark noticed Megan's tablet had been left behind on the side table. It was plugged into the wall near the Christmas tree charger completely unlocked. Mark picked it up intending to shut it off so he wouldn't have to look at her things. But a series of active text notifications flashed across the screen from an unknown local number. Mark frowned as his eyes read the rapid text messages scrolling across the glowing glass display.

Mark: Laura... look at this text chain between Megan and her lawyer right now.

Laura: What does it say Mark? Is it about her settlement money?

Mark: It's not about her money. It is about our family trust fund from Dad's estate.

Mark scrolled up through months of detailed message exchanges between Megan and a shady divorce lawyer. The text messages revealed that Megan had been secretly trying to forge documents to steal our daughter's college inheritance fund. My late father-in-law had left a massive two-hundred-thousand-dollar trust for Lily that was managed under a family estate plan. Megan had been filing fraudulent paperwork claiming Mark was an unfit parent so she could gain legal custody of the trust funds to pay off her massive personal gambling debts.

My heart sank into my stomach as the full scope of her dark betrayal became crystal clear to us. The violence tonight was not just a sudden burst of bad temper over a crying baby. It was part of a deep bitter hatred she carried for our family's stability and security.
