The Gilded Cage

The bright morning sun streamed through the high arching windows of the Vance estate, illuminating the polished marble floors and casting long shadows across the living room. Underneath a massive framed American flag that hung near the fireplace, everything seemed quiet and perfect. But inside this huge house, real happiness was nowhere to be found. Sarah had worked for the Vance family for nearly three years, serving as the primary maid and nanny for little Leo. She cared deeply for the six-month-old child, especially after his biological mother passed away shortly after giving birth. Ethan Vance, a wealthy real estate developer and biological father to Leo, was constantly consumed by business, boardroom meetings, and endless legal travels.

Three months ago, Ethan had remarried. His new wife, Victoria, was a glamorous socialite who wore shimmering emerald-green diamond gowns and demanded complete authority over the household staff. To the outside world, she appeared like a devoted new stepmother ready to raise an heir. But behind closed doors, away from Ethan's sight, Victoria showed nothing but ice-cold detachment toward the infant. She viewed little Leo not as a child to be loved, but as a dangerous obstacle standing directly between her and full control of the Vance family trust fund, inheritance, and real estate estate.

Sarah spent her morning scrubbing the white marble steps and keeping a watchful eye on the drawing room. She noticed how Victoria walked into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the tile. Victoria held a glass of orange juice, her face twisted in annoyance as little Leo began to fuss softly in his crib. Sarah paused her work, her heart tightening. She had learned to read Victoria's mood swings, and today the woman's eyes burned with unusual malice. Ethan was scheduled to return from a court settlement meeting within the hour, but for now, the grand mansion belonged entirely to Victoria's cold commands.

Victoria: Sarah! Why is this little parasite still making noise in my presence?

Sarah: Ma'am, he is just hungry. I was about to prepare his bottle right now.

Victoria: You should have had it ready ten minutes ago, you incompetent fool.

Sarah: I apologize, ma'am. I will fetch the warm milk immediately.

Sarah rushed down the wide corridor toward the kitchen, her apron swishing against her knees. She felt a deep sense of dread settled in the pit of her stomach. She hated leaving Leo alone in the living room with Victoria, even for two minutes. Victoria never spoke softly to the child, nor did she ever hold him with gentle hands. As Sarah poured the warm milk into the glass bottle, her hands trembled slightly. She had promised Leo's late mother that she would protect the boy, no matter how hard her job became under Victoria's cruel rules.

Outside the kitchen window, the estate grounds looked vast and cold. Sarah wiped the edge of the bottle and hurried back down the hall. As she approached the grand arches of the main living room, the quiet morning was suddenly shattered by a sharp, terrible sound. It was not a normal baby's cry or a simple tearful fuss. It was a violent, breath-catching scream of sheer physical agony that made Sarah's blood run cold. She dropped the cloth in her hand and began to run toward the open doors as fast as her feet could carry her.
