The Rehearsal Dinner Mistake

The dining room of the luxury Dallas mansion was filled with warm light from the grand crystal chandelier hanging overhead. Warm autumn sunshine poured through the high windows, reflecting off polished mahogany furniture and delicate fine china set for twelve guests. A framed vintage American flag hung proudly on the accent wall, adding a classic touch to the elegant room. Julian sat at the head of the long table, adjusting his black tie while reviewing the evening menu with his mother. Everything had to be perfect for the night before their grand wedding event.

Victoria walked into the room wearing a custom beige silk dress that shimmered under the bright room lights. Her posture was poised and arrogant as she inspected the silver utensils laid out beside each floral plate. Behind her, a young maid named Elena adjusted the linen napkins with quiet care, trying her best to remain completely unnoticed. Elena had worked for the rich family for three years, saving every single dollar to support her younger sick brother. She was always gentle, hardworking, and deeply respectful toward everyone in the grand household.

Victoria: Make sure the water glasses are filled with ice, girl. My mother does not like room temperature water.

Elena: Yes, Miss Victoria. I will bring a fresh ice pitcher from the kitchen right away.

Elena turned quickly toward the side table, but her shoe caught the edge of the plush Persian rug beneath the dining table. She stumbled forward slightly, spilling a few drops of hot clear soup onto Victoria's silk sleeve. The liquid was barely warm, but Victoria shrieked loud enough to startle the caterers working in the nearby kitchen hall. Her face twisted into immediate rage as she stared at the small wet spot on her expensive designer dress.

Victoria: NO!

Before anyone in the room could react, Victoria raised her right hand and slapped Elena hard across the face. The sharp sound echoed through the quiet room like a sudden gunshot, stunning the whole staff into absolute silence. Elena gasped, stepping back into the shadow of the velvet curtains while cradling her burning, reddened cheek. Big tears welled in her eyes as she trembled from the unexpected pain and public humiliation. Julian froze in his chair, his hands gripping the mahogany table edge as his blood ran cold.

Elena: AH! I am so sorry, ma'am! It was an accident, I swear!

Victoria: You stupid girl! Look what you did! You ruined my custom dress right before our guests arrive!

Julian stood up slowly from his seat, his black suit perfectly tailored, but his face dark with absolute shock. He stared at the woman he was supposed to vow his entire life to in less than twenty-four hours. Victoria turned to him, her face filled with expected support, clearly assuming he would back her up against the crying maid. She smoothed her silk dress down, pointing a manicured fingernail at the shaking staff member weeping quietly near the wall.

Victoria: Julian, fire her right now! Throw her out on the street before my mother gets here!

Julian: Did you just hit her, Victoria?

Victoria: She was careless! She needs to be taught a lesson about respect! Tell her to pack her things!

Julian did not yell or raise his voice, but the silence that followed his step forward was heavier than thunder. He looked down at the glittering engagement ring on Victoria's finger, then down at his own hand. The illusion of the perfect woman he thought he loved shattered completely into a thousand sharp pieces right there. The rehearsal dinner was about to start, but the entire future of their relationship had just reached a dead end.
