The morning sun cut through the tall glass windows of the luxury Dallas mansion, casting long shadows across the polished white marble floors. Arthur Vance sat at the head of the dark oak dining table, his black suit crisp and unwrinkled as he checked his golden pocket watch. Everything in his home was supposed to be perfect today, especially with the rehearsal dinner scheduled for the upcoming weekend. His fiancé, Evelyn, had been spending millions of dollars from his family trust fund to organize what the local news called the wedding of the century. Yet, despite all the luxury surrounding him, Arthur felt a strange weight hanging over his chest that he could not easily explain to anyone.
Evelyn walked into the spacious dining room wearing a sleeveless beige silk dress that shimmered under the grand crystal chandelier hanging overhead. Her high heels tapped loudly against the hard floor as she carried a heavy silver tray loaded with fresh fruit and hot coffee. She placed it down with a sharp thud that made the fine china rattle softly on the linen tablecloth. Behind her walked Maria, an older maid in a neat black uniform who had worked for the Vance family for over twenty years. Maria looked exhausted, her tired eyes staring down at the floor as she carried a pitcher of orange juice toward the breakfast setup.
Evelyn: Make sure you do not spill a single drop on this imported table runner today, Maria.
Maria: Of course, Miss Evelyn, I will be very careful with everything.
Arthur looked up from his tablet, observing the cold tone in Evelyn's voice that seemed to grow stronger with every passing week. When they first met at a charity gala six months ago, she appeared sweet, gentle, and deeply caring toward everyone around her. Now that the engagement ring was firmly on her finger, her entire attitude seemed to shift into something cold and controlling. Arthur wiped his mouth with a cloth napkin and cleared his throat softly before speaking to his bride-to-be.
Arthur: Is there any reason you are speaking so harshly to Maria this morning, Evelyn?
Evelyn: I am simply establishing proper house standards before our high-society guests arrive tonight, my love.
Suddenly, Maria's hand trembled as she reached over a delicate crystal wine glass near the centerpiece. Her elbow caught the thin stem, sending the expensive glass crashing against the edge of the marble table where it shattered into dozens of tiny, glittering pieces across the floor. Orange juice pooled quickly over the white fabric, soaking into the delicate weave. Maria gasped in horror, dropping to her knees immediately to clean up the wet mess with her paper napkins.
Maria: Oh goodness! I am so sorry, sir! My hand slipped, I will clean it up right now!
Evelyn: NO!
Before Arthur could even stand up from his chair, Evelyn stepped forward with her face contorted in absolute rage. Her right hand swung back and struck Maria sharply across the cheek with a loud, echoey slap that cut through the room like a gunshot. The sound reverberated off the tall white walls, leaving a thick, suffocating silence in the air. Maria let out a loud sob, clutching her red face as fresh tears welled up in her eyes while kneeling on the hard ground.
Arthur froze in place, his hands gripping the edges of his seat so hard his knuckles turned completely white. He stared at the scene unfolding before him, unable to process the pure cruelty he had just witnessed in his own home. Evelyn stood tall over the weeping woman, breathing heavily with her arms crossed tightly over her chest as if she had done nothing wrong at all. She turned toward Arthur with a confident smile, expecting him to agree with her violent discipline.
